Learn to ride the world’s best right‑hand break.
Since 2013, small groups and real local coaches have taught first paddles and pro-level line reading, right next door to Supertubes.
Why JBay
Perfect walls. Forgiving inside sections.
Supertubes gets the headlines, but the real secret is what sits next to it. Kitchen Windows and Lower Point serve up long, peeling, forgiving waves that let a first-timer stand up on day one, and let an intermediate surfer actually learn to read a line, not just survive one.
Add water warm enough for a spring suit most of the year, swell that rarely goes flat, and a lineup we’ve coached in for thirteen years, and you’ve got the best classroom in surfing.
Lessons for every level
Pick your starting point. All lessons run in small groups with a qualified local coach, gear included.
Surf camps
Multi-day packages that pair daily coaching with a place to sleep, eat, and recover between sessions.
Accommodation
Stay 200m from the lineup
Camp guests stay at Driftwood House, our beachfront cottage, or a partner guesthouse when we’re full, both an easy walk to the point.
Driftwood House is a converted beachfront cottage we’ve run since the academy opened, not a hotel bolted onto the business afterward. Rooms are simple and comfortable, the deck faces the point, and you’ll usually find a coach making coffee in the kitchen before the dawn session. When we’re fully booked, we place guests at a partner guesthouse two doors down, same walk to the water.
- Board storage & wetsuit rinse station
- Sea-view communal deck
- Shared kitchen, stocked with breakfast basics
- Free WiFi & hot showers
- Daily housekeeping on camp packages
- 200m walk to the JBay lineup

Frequently asked questions
Just swimwear, a towel, sunscreen (reef-safe, please), and a bottle of water. We provide boards, wetsuits, and rash vests for every lesson and camp package. If you have your own board or wetsuit you’re welcome to bring it, just let us know when you book.
No. Most of our Beginner guests have never stood on a board. We start everyone on the inside sections at Lower Point, which are gentle enough for a first-timer but still real, uncrowded waves, not a wave pool. Intermediate and Advanced lessons assume you can already catch and ride a wave to your feet.
JBay works year-round. March to September brings bigger, more consistent groundswell and is best for Intermediate/Advanced guests. October to February is smaller and cleaner with warmer water, which is why most of our Beginner bookings land in that window. Water temperature ranges from about 15°C in winter to 22°C in summer, and a 3/2 wetsuit covers you most of the year.
Fly into Port Elizabeth (PLZ), about 90 minutes away by road. Camp guests can add an airport transfer when they book. If you’re driving, JBay sits right on the N2 between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, so it’s an easy stop on a Garden Route trip.
Single lessons can be rescheduled or refunded free of charge up to 24 hours before your session, and we’ll move you around bad weather at no cost either way. Camp deposits are refundable up to 14 days before arrival; after that, the deposit is credited toward a future trip.
Yes, that’s exactly why we teach here. Lower Point and Kitchen Windows are sheltered, sandy-bottomed sections with a gentle, predictable break, and every lesson includes an ocean-safety briefing before you paddle out. Every coach is a trained local waterman who surfs this lineup year-round.
